I am happy to visit your school, library, bookstore or conference venue and share my passion for writing and children’s books.

General Presentations:

Interactive general presentations use power-point for part of the session and include plenty of time for Q & A.

Grades K-1 I talk about what an author is, how being an author is different from being an illustrator, the difference between fiction and nonfiction and then we read and discuss one of my books. (30 minutes)
Grades 2-6 I talk about how I became an author, the stories behind some of my books, where I get my ideas, my writing (and Rewriting process), and how a book gets published. I give 2th-6th graders the tools to write their own fiction stories and I stress the importance of having a goal (whether that goal be writing or something else) and working toward it. (45-60 minutes)
Middle School or High School I am happy to talk to middle school and high school groups, but prefer to work with smaller groups. I can talk about what it’s like to be a writer, where I find ideas, the writing/revising process, careers for writers, and how to get published. (45-60 minutes)
Adults I am happy to talk to adults about how I became an author, the writing/revising process, and/or how to get published.

Small Group Discussions on Bullying and Cyberbullying:

Targeted to grades 4-6 or 6-8, generally for students who have read my Tank Talbott books and/or The Truth About Truman School. We talk about what is/isn’t bullying, causes of bullying, and role-play ways of dealing with bullying.

Workshops:

Workshops can be tailored to any age/grade. Smaller groups (less than 30 students) work best. Choose from the following:

bulletHow character and plot work together (45-60 min.)
bulletRevision (45-60 min.)
bulletHow to get published (45-60 min.)
bulletA full week of workshops that focus on a different element each day: ideas, character, plot, peer critiquing and revision.

Handouts:

I have handouts to go with most of the workshops – I will send them to you a week before my visit and ask that you make copies for all your students.

Skype:

I can also talk to your group via Skype. I ask that your students read at least one of my books first and come prepared with questions. (short Q&A session are free)

Other Information:

I do up to four presentations per day. These sessions can include any combination of general presentations, small group discussions and/or writing workshops. If you’d like to share my expenses with another school for one day, I am happy to do two sessions at one school and two sessions at another.

Please allow at least 15 minutes between sessions, time for lunch, and, if necessary, time to get to a second school.

I am happy to sign books during my visit. If you would like to have a book sale to help offset my honorarium, my publishers offer substantial discounts. There is more information on this in my author packet.

Note:  Unfortunately, I get a lot of junk email and sometimes real email doesn't make it to my inbox.  If I don't respond within a week, please try again.  I do respond to all requests for information about school visits, so if you don't get a response I probably didn't get your message.
